Although he was encouraged by his Army supervising doctors to become a physician, he felt a calling to the ministry. He graduated from Moody Bible Institute and Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary. He pastored at First Baptist Church in Carson City, First Baptist Church in Zeeland, Spring Lake Baptist, Trinity Baptist in Grand Rapids, Alaska Baptist Church, Church of the Open Door in Wyoming, and was presently Pastor Emeritus at Sparta Baptist Church. Pastor VanderLugt was often called upon to speak and fulfill interim pastorates.
