The Long-Expected Saviour

Consider how Jesus’ life was an echo of the stories of Old Testament figures who came before him, ultimately proving that he could and would succeed where everyone else before him had failed. As he penned his gospel, Matthew drew parallels from Jesus to people such as Moses, Elijah, Solomon, the good shepherd in Jeremiah, Elisha, Jonah, and Adam—people who had only partially lived up to God’s call to save his people. Jesus came to be our ultimate source of hope and salvation—surpassing everyone who came before him.

Joseph R. Dodson is the Craig L. Blomberg Endowed Chair of New Testament at Denver Seminary and a pastor at New Denver Church. Joseph studied at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and continued his studies at the University of Tübingen in Germany. He and his elementary school sweetheart, Sadie, have five children, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and the greatest granddaughter and grandson in the entire world. He is also an avid hiker who has summited countless mountains around the world and has bagged two-thirds of “the 14ers” in the contiguous US.
