The letters of 1 and 2 Timothy are Paul’s heartfelt words written to his successor, Timothy. Their primary purpose is to encourage Timothy in his gospel ministry, because proclaiming the gospel would become increasingly difficult in the last days. Paul’s exhortations to Timothy have not lost their significance over time; they remain just as relevant for Christians today.

Paul solemnly urges the young Timothy to carefully watch his life and the teaching of Scripture. The word “watch carefully” means “to pay close and careful attention,” much like how people monitor their physical health and take immediate action when something seems wrong. Dr. Robert M. Solomon served as Bishop of the Methodist Church in Singapore from 2000 to 2012. After retiring, he has been invited to speak at conferences and teach around the world.
